Cole Campbell, dean of the Donald W. Reynolds School of Journalism was killed Friday, Jan. 5 in an automobile accident.
An evangelist for journalistic change, he sought ways to enhance the relationship between journalism and democracy. He continually questioned how journalism as a profession, institution, and business could better serve citizens and public life.
Before joining the Reynolds School in July 2004, Campbell was a senior associate of the Charles P. Kettering Foundation, an organization that studies the democratic process.
He was the former editor of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, Va.
