A 1961 graduate and subsequent editor, publisher of Reno newspapers, Warren suggested to UNR President Joe Crowley in the late l970s that the small department be developed into what is today’s full school of journalism. Warren joined the faculty in l981, taught media law, management and internships through retirement in 2009.
Warren led a team of three editors to win the l977 Pulitzer Prize in Journalism for Editorial Writing. He is author of three books, American Commander in Spain, text for Above Tahoe and Reno and Robert Laxalt: The Story of a Storyteller.
Warren served on the l982 Washington, D.C. launch team for USA TODAY, Oakland Tribune board and National Center for Courts and Media advisory committee. He serves on the Maynard Institute for Journalism Education board. He created the Warren Lerude Writing Center and Lerude First Amendment Endowment. Warren served as Nevada Press Association president.
