Biography
Victoria Campbell is the senior reporter at the NBC affiliate in Reno, KRNV-TV. She has worked at the station since June, 1987.
Each fall since 2003, Victoria has taught an advanced senior Broadcast Journalism class at the University of Nevada, Reno. She also serves as an adjunct faculty member at the National Judicial College, serving on panel discussions regarding media and the courts. In May, 2008 she earned her Master's degree in International Relations with a Concentration in Justice and Homeland Security from Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island , graduating with a 3.98 grade point average.
Victoria is a native Californian who was raised in a little town called Sanger, about 15 miles east of Fresno in the Central Valley. She loves to travel and her favorite cities are London, Paris, Rome and San Francisco. Most recently, she traveled to Alaska and Canada with her family. In her spare time, she likes to read, go shopping, plan her next vacation and go to the movies.
Victoria Campbell got into the news business by accident. Her first love was the theatre and initially she wanted to be a stage actress. She received her first Bachelor's degree in Theatre Arts at California State University, Fresno. While pursuing the Theatre Arts degree, she needed a minor course of study, and decided to take a few classes in journalism before graduation. She enjoyed those classes so much, she earned a second Bachelor's degree in Journalism/Radio-Television News Communications. She graduated with honors from CSUF and spent three years working "behind the scenes" at KFSN-TV in Fresno before coming to KRNV-TV in Reno.
During her second year at Channel 4, Campbell was assigned to the Crime and Courts beat, where she remains today.
"My favorite kind of story is one that involves a criminal investigation or any kind of criminal court hearing," Victoria says. She loves the unpredictability of her job, and the fact that she never, ever has the same day twice. She meets new people every day, learns about their jobs and learns more about the world. It's a great way to satisfy her endless curiosity, she says, and she doesn't think she "would enjoy a job that didn't offer such a diverse experience."
Victoria has covered every kind of story imaginable, from natural disasters to feature stories to budget hearings, and everything in between. In July 2004, she and Chief Photographer Jeff Deitch were covering the Waterfall Fire outside Carson City when they became trapped behind the fire lines. The video Jeff shot on that day as they drove through the fire in a scorched news car was aired all over the world. The story of their narrow escape was featured the next night on "Inside Edition," which aired across the country.
In 2005, Victoria and Jeff were awarded the coveted Edward R. Murrow Award for Spot News for their coverage of the fire. Later that year, Campbell was elected to the Nevada Broadcasting Hall of Fame during a ceremony in Las Vegas.
She loves teaching students at UNR because their curiosity and eagerness to learn consistently remind her of why she has loved her career so much.
