Why I teach

I enjoy the burgeoning sense of communications enrichment that students undergo when they understand that they've acquired fluency in a new language, that their ideas and their observations can be expressed in new ways, with new levels of nuance and meaning. Sharing in this process of my students' empowerment and discovery keeps me going.

What I've Learned

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance applies also to reading software manuals from beginning to end.

Crunching up and sniffing a sagebrush leaf provides the energy for hiking another mile.

It's OK to eat alone in a fancy restaurant, as long as you're reading a newspaper.

Wilderness is next to godliness.

As adults' eyes age, their old friends appear to them to remain fixed in time. You are only young once, but with some effort you can act immature your entire life.

Everyone has a story to tell. If you live long enough, you'll be famous.

The grass may be greener on the California side of the fence, but everyone wants to move to Nevada.

Gambling is attractive to the folks who were sleeping during math class.
