Why I teach

I teach to learn. I teach to see the smiles of joy, delight and discovery when students accomplish something they never believed possible.

What I've Learned

  • You can talk about writing to a group, but you can only teach writing to one person at a time.
  • Good writing can not be separated from good thinking.
  • The instructor is never the most important person in the classroom or lab.
  • Students have much to teach me.
  • Information fuels creativity.
  • True curiosity is rare. Nurture it.
  • Floundering Around Theory: Resist the temptation to give students answers and they will find their own.
  • Don't ask if you've been nice enough to a student. Ask if you've been honest enough.
  • Laughter and fun are vital elements of any learning environment. Chocolate also helps.
