Reynolds School Abroad: Professors Alan Deutschman and Todd Felts to teach specialty classes in Spain and Brazil
Studying abroad is a right passage for many students, and Reynolds School Professors Alan Deutschman, Reynolds Chair of Business Journalism, and Todd Felts, assistant professor of Strategic Communication, will be teaching special summer session courses in 2018. Deutschman will be teaching a Food Writing and Photography course in San Sebastián, Spain, and Felts will be teaching a Business Communications and Social Media course in Florianópolis, Brazil. Interested? Here is a break down of each:
Food Writing and Photography in San Sebastián, Spain:
JOUR, 300-level, 3 credits
Students enrolled in Food Writing and Photography with Professor Deutschman will be exposed to the wide variety of experiences offered through food journalism. The course will be emphasizing the cultural aspects of food, and what the culinary traditions of a city or town can reveal about culture and place. Students enrolled in the course will not only be able to engage with the food and culture of San Sebastián, Spain in a unique way, but they will also be creating work that can be used to build their portfolios.
“I taught this course in Summer 2016 for USAC in Viterbo, Italy,” Deutschman said. “The idea is that we get out of the classroom to visit and interview local food professionals, and then the students blog and write articles about their experiences. In Viterbo we visited the local gelato joint, a mozzarella factory, a winery, a coffee roaster, an olive oil press, two bakeries, a farmer’s market, and several restaurants. I’m so excited about teaching this course in San Sebastián because the city and region are famous for their food.”

- This course can be combined with a course on Spanish culture.
Business Communications and Social Media in Florianópolis, Brazil:
BUS/COM, 400-level, 3 credits
Students enrolled in Business Communications and Social Media with Professor Felts will be exploring the ways in which social media and digital communications are revolutionizing the way the world’s population is communicating with one another. This is made even more interesting by the timing of the course. Students taking the Summer 2018 course will have the opportunity to study business communications and social media during an election year in Brazil. Those who take the class will be exposed to social media strategies in their home cultures, their abroad culture, all while paying special attention to the digital divide.
“Social media in Brazil, of all places, will be a really interesting experience because this is a country that has finally come to a place where the masses are sharing and communicating on social media,” Felts said. “It’ll be a great laboratory for studying how people are engaged. This year is an election year, so every small non-governmental organization in Brazil is building social media platforms to try and influence the election. There’s this growing sentiment around the environment because, of course, the Amazon rainforest is there. But also, a part of the class is helping students tell their own stories as students who study abroad and being able to share those moments back home to the United States.”
