Robert X. Fogarty of Dear World to visit Reynolds School
Dear World Live
Stories of hope. Stories of struggle. Stories of a brighter day.
The Reynolds School of Journalism, the Joe Crowley Student Union and the Associated Students of the University of Nevada (ASUN) are organizing an event for the University on Tuesday, September 2, called Dear World Live. The event will feature portrait photographer Robert X. Fogarty and his project Dear World. During his visit to Nevada, Fogarty will host a portrait photo session that is open to the University and Reno community, as well as a portrait release and keynote address.
In addition to the open shoot and the portrait release and keynote address, the Reynolds School of Journalism will host a FREE “Pizza with Dean” luncheon on Tuesday, Sept. 2, from Noon – 1:15 p.m. on the first floor of the building in the Linn Reading Room. All Reynolds School students are encouraged to attend the lunch, have some pizza and get to know Fogarty. He will discuss how he turned his idea of taking portraits into a successful business that is internationally recognized. Students can network with the Dean and Fogarty and mingle with their fellow students.
Following the Pizza with the Dean event at the Reynolds School, all University students, faculty and staff are invited to “invest in their voice” and share their personal messages with the world.
Fogarty will host an open photo shoot in the Joe Crowley Student Union, Room 323, from 2:30 p.m. – 5 p.m. All are welcome and encouraged to participate in this unique photography event.
Following the open photo shoot, Fogarty will release all of the images captured over the course of the day to the University community in a keynote address on the evening of Sept. 2 in the Joe Crowley Student Union Theater. The doors to the portrait release and keynote address open at 8 p.m. with the keynote address beginning at 8:30 p.m. The keynote is expected to last between 45 minutes and one hour.
Fogarty, a self-taught portrait photographer, launched Dear World as “Dear New Orleans” in 2009.
“I started the project in 2009 in New Orleans, when people across the city wrote their “love notes” and shared them with their communities,” Fogarty said.
“Over the past few years I’ve learned that you can never lose your voice,” Fogarty said. “I’ve looked into the eyes of thousands. They’ve shared the hopes and fears, their losses and joy with me regardless of their religion, race or language. I am excited to bring Dear World to the University of Nevada, Reno and look forward to learning how Nevada invests in its voice.”
Dear World is part business/art project/social experiment. The event at Nevada will celebrate all of the things that make our campus community unique.
Fogarty recently shot a series of portraits honoring the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing. He unveiled his work on the anniversary of the event this April.
He’s also been to Syrian refugee camps and to other international destinations to photograph people allowing them to share their personal stories.
