RSJ Offers New Opportunity for Incoming Freshmen

The Reynolds School of Journalism and Center for Advanced Media Studies will be offering its first-ever Freshmen Intensive Training (FIT) camp August 17-21 for incoming freshmen with a declared journalism major. Dubbed “JFIT,” the camp is a five-day academic program designed to increase success for incoming college students. The program offers a glimpse into the university’s rigorous academic expectations and college life prior to the start of the semester.

The JFIT program comes as a result of the College of Science’s 2013 BioFIT program, a five-day academic training camp for incoming biology majors.  The camp saw such success that University of Nevada Provost Kevin Carman worked to extend the FIT camps across campus, resulting in eight colleges offering 2014 FIT programs—creating NevadaFIT.

Each camp will be specifically tailored to its corresponding major, but will also include sessions on topics that reach across students’ majors. Examples include sessions on financial planning, study skills and student conduct. All NevadaFIT Participants will also be paired with “pack leaders”—upperclassmen who’ve excelled in the corresponding major to each particular camp.

JFIT, exclusively, will offer courses in: storytelling, strategic communication, writing, ethics & law and visual design. Also offered as part of JFIT 2014, is a careers panel, in which the Reynolds School will bring in media professionals from across the field of journalism (news, broadcast, public relations, advertising) for both a moderated panel and a Q&A with students. Participants can also look forward to a field trip to Ace’s Stadium where they’ll be introduced to media career options in sports.

NevadaFIT costs $200 per student. The cost includes materials needed for the program, all meals and the cost of moving into the residence halls early if you are eligible.

Designed to give freshmen an academic leg-up, these camps are exclusive and selective. The Reynolds School will be accepting 18 applicants total. The deadline to apply is June 30, 2014.
